Abia State authorities arrested 109 people in Umuahia on Saturday for violating environmental sanitation rules, including loitering, street football and trading during the restricted period of 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Records from the state Ministry of Environment showed that government task force teams picked up the offenders and brought them before the Environmental Mobile Court at the High Court in Umuahia. The court was presided over by Magistrate Onyinyechi Ibekwe.
During proceedings, three medical students who were among those arrested were discharged after they identified themselves. Twelve other offenders were also released on health grounds.
The remaining 94 persons were prosecuted and ordered to pay fines as well as carry out community service for breaching Abia State basic environmental laws.
After the exercise, Commissioner for Environment Philemon Ogbonna praised residents who took part in the cleanup. Speaking through the ministry’s Head of Department for Pollution Control and Environmental Health, Happiness Agbụlọnụ, the commissioner said compliance improved in several areas but noted persistent breaches in parts of the city.
She said traders at Orie Ugba market in Umuahia failed to fully comply with government sanitation directives. She also said operations were observed at motor parks, including Okigwe Park and Owerri Park, during the official sanitation window, contrary to instructions.
Chairman of the Abia State House of Assembly Committee on Environment, Kalụ Mba Nwoke, said sanctions would become stricter from March 2026 for anyone found violating the state’s environmental laws.
The sanitation enforcement reflects the state government’s renewed push to improve urban hygiene and public health standards through regular monitoring, prosecutions and public compliance measures.
