The Abia State Government has completed a major rehabilitation of Omenuko Bridge, ending years of complaints from motorists and residents who described the structure as a dangerous crossing.

The bridge, which serves as a key route for movement and commerce in the area, had deteriorated badly over time. Road users said deep potholes, visible structural weakness and poor drainage made daily trips risky, especially during the rainy season.

Residents and traders said the condition of the bridge had gone beyond inconvenience. They said it threatened lives, disrupted the flow of goods and slowed local business activity because many commuters had no practical alternative route.

State officials said the completed project is part of Governor Alex Otti’s infrastructure renewal programme, which focuses on restoring critical links in both urban and rural transport corridors.

According to the government, work on Omenuko Bridge covered resurfacing the bridge deck, reinforcing key structural sections and improving drainage channels to reduce water build-up that had previously worsened damage.

A commuter using the route said people used to cross the bridge in fear, particularly when rainfall was heavy and the surface became more unstable. He said confidence has now returned because vehicles can pass without the same level of anxiety.

Traders who depend on the corridor for supply movement also welcomed the upgrade, describing it as a practical intervention that will cut travel stress and support market activity.

Community voices in the area said the bridge project should become a model for similar repairs across the state. They argued that consistent maintenance and timely upgrades are necessary to avoid a return to emergency conditions.

Officials maintained that the administration remains committed to repairing public assets that directly affect safety and economic mobility. They said Omenuko Bridge is one of several projects delivered or underway under the current road infrastructure push.

Since taking office, Otti has repeatedly positioned transport infrastructure as a central policy priority. The Omenuko Bridge rehabilitation now stands as an early result of that agenda and a test case for broader renewal plans.

For many local residents, the project represents more than a construction update. They see it as a shift from prolonged neglect to active response, with immediate gains for commuters, transport operators and small businesses.

With the bridge now restored to use, expectations are rising that other aging public facilities in Abia will receive similar attention so that communities can move, trade and work without avoidable risk.
