The Federal Government said the Abuja-Kaduna highway has reached 80 per cent completion, with officials projecting delivery of the remaining section by the end of April. The Ministry of Works gave the update during an inspection tour under the ongoing National Media Tour, where project managers said work is moving on an accelerated schedule.
According to the ministry, 60 kilometres of the redesigned road section are complete, while 21 kilometres are still under construction. The corridor is being rebuilt with Continuous Reinforced Concrete Pavement after the previous contract model was discontinued. Officials said the switch from asphalt to rigid concrete pavement is intended to improve durability and reduce frequent maintenance on one of the country’s busiest federal roads.
Chukwuma Kalu, Controller of Works on the project, said the road remains a national priority because of its strategic role in linking regions and supporting trade and passenger movement. Kalu said the earlier contract with Julius Berger Nigeria Plc was terminated and the project was re-awarded to Infouest Nigeria Limited to speed up completion. He said the project history had been difficult, but added that current delivery targets are being pursued with round-the-clock construction shifts.
Kalu said the project includes a 40.5-kilometre dual carriageway CRCP section, equivalent to 81 kilometres in combined lanes, a 17.3-kilometre asphalt link to the Kano-Zaria road, and a 6.63-kilometre dual asphalt overlay in Kano State. He said the team is confident the outstanding CRCP stretch will be completed before the end of April.
Robert Turner, Senior Project Manager at Infouest Nigeria Limited, said the company remains committed to the delivery timeline. Turner said finishing the route would support economic activity, social mobility, and regional connectivity. The Abuja-Kaduna road carries a high volume of commuter traffic, freight movement, and interstate transport, making completion critical for safety and logistics efficiency.
In a related update, the ministry said reconstruction of the 43.65-kilometre Maraba-Keffi road has reached 90 per cent completion, with a June 2026 delivery target. The N73.8 billion project is being executed by China Harbour Engineering Construction Company under the Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit scheme. Scope includes site clearance, stone base construction, asphaltic binder and wearing courses, and reinforced concrete drainage works.
Abdullahi Muhammed, Director of Press at the Ministry of Works, said the media tour is intended to show progress on federal transport projects across the country. Muhammed said transport infrastructure remains central to the policy direction of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, with priority attention on major gateways into the Federal Capital Territory. He said the Maraba-Keffi corridor is a key entry route from Nasarawa State and the wider North-Central axis.
With both projects now at advanced stages, ministry officials said the goal is to strengthen national road connectivity, improve travel safety, and lower transport friction for businesses and households that rely on the routes each day.
