Adamu Atiku Abubakar, the first son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has resigned from his position as Adamawa State Commissioner for Works and Energy Development, ending his time in Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s cabinet.
The resignation was announced in a statement issued on Monday by his media aide, Abdulaziz Jauro. The statement said Adamu submitted a formal resignation letter dated March 2, 2026, and expressed appreciation to the governor for the opportunity to serve.
According to the statement, he thanked Fintiri for what he described as trust and confidence in assigning him a strategic portfolio in the state executive council.
“The Honourable Commissioner for Works and Energy Development, Adamawa State, Alhaji Adamu Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned from his position after serving two successful terms in office,” the statement said.
It added that he considered his appointment a significant honour and said he remained committed to the administration’s development direction even after leaving office.
Adamu also acknowledged support from his father, Atiku Abubakar, saying that moral backing and blessing from his family helped him during his period in government.
In addition, he praised Permanent Secretaries in the Works and Energy ministries, along with directors, engineers and other staff, for their dedication to infrastructure delivery across Adamawa.
He thanked residents of Jada, his community, for what he called consistent prayers and encouragement throughout his tenure.
The statement said his resignation should not be read as a withdrawal from public life. Instead, it described the move as the start of another phase of engagement in development efforts in the state.
His exit comes amid wider political shifts in Adamawa. Adamu was absent on Thursday at the Government House event where Governor Fintiri defected to the All Progressives Congress.
Political discussions have also intensified around Adamu’s next move. He is reported to have governorship ambition, though he has not publicly declared the party platform he intends to use.
Sources close to Atiku Abubakar told journalists, on condition of anonymity, that the former vice president has endorsed Adamu for a senatorial race. In related developments, Abba Atiku will be contesting for a House of Representatives seat on the platform of the APC.
Adamu Atiku is the first son of Atiku’s first wife, Titi Atiku, while Abba Atiku is from Atiku’s second wife, Laadi Yakubu Atiku.
