Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday led federal lawmakers to the Abuja residence of the late Senator Barinada Mpigi, where they paid a condolence visit to his family.
The visit came about two weeks after Mpigi died in a London hospital at the age of 64 following a brief illness. He represented Rivers South East Senatorial District in the Senate until his death.
A statement issued by Akpabio’s Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, said members of the National Assembly used the visit to sympathise with the family and recognise the late senator’s service record.
During the condolence meeting, Akpabio described Mpigi’s death as a major loss to the Senate and the country.
“Senator Mpigi was a dedicated public servant who contributed meaningfully to legislative development and nation-building.
“He was committed to the welfare of his constituents, and his passion for service would not be forgotten. His legacy would continue to inspire younger generations of leaders,” he said.
Akpabio encouraged the family to take comfort in what he called the late lawmaker’s impact in public life and his contributions to parliamentary work.
Other senators in the delegation also offered prayers for the family and paid tribute to Mpigi’s role in committee work and constituency representation.
The Senate has continued mourning activities since news of his death, with colleagues describing him as calm, accessible and committed to legislative duty.
Mpigi served as the senator for Rivers South East and was known within the chamber for his participation in debates affecting his district and the wider Niger Delta.
His death adds to recent losses in the legislature that have prompted renewed conversations around health support for public office holders and continuity in representation when vacancies occur.
For now, attention remains on funeral arrangements and support for the family, while the Senate leadership has maintained that his service to constituents and parliament will be remembered.
