Activist lawyer, Maduabuchi Idam has likened the diplomatic appointments of Reno Omokri and Femi Fani-Kayode as Nigeria’s ambassadors to Mexico and Germany to sending presidential aide, Daniel Bwala, to mock President Bola Tinubu at the international scene.

Idam argued that the appointments could create contradictions for the administration of Tinubu on the international stage.

In a statement he signed, the lawyer said appointing individuals who had previously criticised the president could place them in a difficult position while representing Nigeria abroad.

“Appointing Reno Omokri and Femi Fani-Kayode to Mexico and Germany respectively would be akin to sending Daniel Bwala to mock Mr. President before the world by attempting to defend his past utterances,” Idam said.

He added that such appointments could potentially undermine the government’s image internationally.

“This crop of ambassadors may well become the nemesis of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu before the international community. Representing a government led by a man they once regarded as morally unfit to rule a country presents an irredeemable contradiction,” he stated.

Idam further said the situation could either strengthen the president politically if the administration succeeds despite the controversy, or damage the reputations of those appointed.

“It is either President Tinubu sails through with this crop of ambassadors and wins the next election despite his fractured reputation, or their own reputations, careers, and public service will stand blemished —if not ruined completely—before the international community,” he said.

He also questioned how the international community might perceive such diplomatic representatives.

“I am not sure any serious nation will take Nigeria seriously while dealing with an ambassador who resents his own president and once regarded him as morally bankrupt.

“President has much to prove to the world by rewarding individuals who once called him unworthy names,” Idam added.
