Artemi Panarin’s move to the Los Angeles Kings has produced one of the most unusual jersey-number stories in recent NHL memory.
In professional sports, incoming players often present gifts to teammates to take over preferred shirt numbers. In this case, however, Panarin had to strike a deal with the Kings’ mascot, Bailey.
Panarin, traded to Los Angeles shortly before the Olympic break, wanted to wear No. 72 again — the number he used when he entered the league with the Chicago Blackhawks. But Bailey already uses No. 72, with the mascot’s explanation being: "Because it's always 72 degrees in Los Angeles."
A playful “number trade” followed. Panarin will now wear No. 72 for the Kings, while Bailey received a Rolex in return.
The Kings highlighted the moment on social media with the caption, "Our 72s 🖤," as the arrangement quickly drew attention from fans.
It is effectively a win-win setup for both sides. Since Bailey does not take the ice during games in the same way players do, the mascot is still expected to continue wearing No. 72 in the stands.
