The reported selection of 16 female students of Government Comprehensive High School, Taabaa, in Khana Local Government Area, for alleged forced virginity testing is disturbing. According to the State Ministry of Education, individuals claiming to represent a traditional institution allegedly visited the school on September 17, 2026, under the guise of offering scholarships and exercise books before selecting the students for the exercise. The incident reportedly provoked objections and a peaceful protest. I commend the ministry for investigating the allegation. The inquiry must establish the facts and ensure that anyone culpable faces appropriate consequences. Educational assistance must never become a means of exposing children to coercion, humiliation or invasive practices. Traditional institutions have important cultural roles, but no tradition should violate children’s rights and dignity. Virginity testing lacks reliable scientific basis and can cause psychological distress, shame and stigmatisation.  The students’ privacy and welfare must be protected, with counselling provided where necessary. The ministry should also prohibit unauthorised examinations in schools and require authorities to verify scholarship offers and other initiatives involving pupils. Schools must remain safe places where children learn without fear of abuse. I urge the government to conclude the investigation and strengthen preventive measures before this disturbing practice becomes a norm. Fiona Kogbara Aba Road, PH.   As Governance Takes A Back Seat Across the country, politicians appear increasingly preoccupied with the 2027 general election, while governance takes a back seat. Political officeholders and aspirants are attending gatherings, touring communities and canvassing support as they position themselves for elective offices. Although political ambition is legitimate, it must not overshadow the responsibility to serve citizens. Nigerians face deteriorating roads, rising healthcare costs, unaffordable medicines and dangerous fake products. Unemployment, insecurity, rising living costs and inadequate public services further worsen household difficulties. Instead of sustained efforts to address these problems, citizens increasingly witness political manoeuvring. Public office exists to serve the people, not merely to secure another term or pursue higher positions. Those seeking re-election must demonstrate what they have achieved. Their records, rather than rallies and campaign promises, should determine whether they deserve another mandate. Governance must continue regardless of approaching elections.  Federal, state and local governments must prioritise essential services, infrastructure, effective regulation and improved living conditions. Political parties and aspirants must remember that Nigerians need solutions, not endless campaigns. As 2027 approaches, leaders must balance political ambitions with public responsibilities. Citizens should not suffer while elected officials concentrate on securing their political future. Measurable achievements and responsive governance must speak louder than campaign promises. Salma Ibrahim Rumuokoro, PH.   Ebola In Abuja? Reports of a possible Ebola outbreak in Abuja demand urgent attention. Given the disease’s seriousness, the Federal Government and relevant health authorities must establish the facts and inform the public promptly. Although unverified reports can cause panic, dismissing a potentially serious health concern without investigation could have grave consequences. The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), and FCT health authorities should investigate and communicate their findings transparently. If no case is confirmed, the public deserves credible reassurance. If suspected or confirmed cases exist, appropriate measures must be taken immediately to prevent transmission. Ebola requires early detection, effective surveillance, infection prevention and prompt medical attention. Health facilities must be prepared, and healthcare workers equipped to handle suspected cases safely. Public enlightenment is equally essential. Nigerians need accurate information about transmission and appropriate steps to take if exposure is suspected. The media must verify reports before publication to prevent misinformation and unnecessary fear.I urge the authorities to investigate these reports thoroughly and respond decisively to any confirmed threat. Protecting public health demands transparency, vigilance and timely action. Nigerians deserve reliable information and confidence that authorities are prepared to protect lives. Tonia Iweka Ogbor Hill, Aba
