Chowdeck has partnered with MyCoverGenius to provide personal accident insurance for more than 20,000 delivery riders across Nigeria, in a move aimed at strengthening welfare protections in the country’s fast-growing delivery market.
The companies said the arrangement started in November 2024 and automatically places every active Chowdeck rider on an accident insurance plan. According to details shared by the firms, the package covers accidental medical expenses, temporary disability and other protections intended to support riders while they work on the platform.
Chowdeck, launched in October 2021, said the insurance partnership is part of a wider effort to improve conditions for riders who handle meal and package deliveries for its customer base, which now exceeds two million users in Nigeria.
"Riders are a critical part of everything we do at Chowdeck," the Head of Operations, Umar Nasir, said. "This partnership with MyCoverGenius is about more than just insurance; it is about setting a new benchmark for how delivery platforms in Africa should protect and support their people. We want every Chowdeck rider to feel secure knowing their wellbeing is just as important as the meals and packages they deliver every day."
The CEO of MyCoverGenius, Adebowale Banjo, said the agreement aligns with the insurer’s objective of widening practical insurance access for workers in the digital economy.
"Our mission has always been to make insurance accessible, relevant, and impactful for everyday Africans," Banjo said. "By partnering with Chowdeck, we are extending protection to thousands of hard-working riders and demonstrating how digital platforms can integrate insurance in ways that directly improve lives."
The announcement comes amid continued expansion in Nigeria’s gig economy. A recent survey cited by the companies found that 64 per cent of location-based gig workers said earnings from digital platforms make a meaningful contribution to household finances. With demand for on-demand delivery services rising, the partnership is likely to increase pressure on other operators to offer stronger rider protections.
