Former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Amusa Adisa has urged Singida Black Stars SC not to punish Nigerian goalkeeper Amas Obasogie before concluding its investigation into match-fixing allegations.
The Tanzanian club suspended Obasogie after goals conceded in a CAF Confederation Cup game against Flambeau du Centre and a domestic league fixture against Namungo FC. The decision triggered debate in Nigerian football circles, with former players warning against equating costly mistakes with deliberate misconduct.
Speaking in Ilorin, Adisa said the club should avoid rushing to judgment. He said mistakes are common in a goalkeeperâs role and should not be treated as automatic evidence of manipulation.
âGoalkeepers make mistakes all the time. That is how goals happen,â Adisa said. âUnfortunately, the spectre of match fixing has become troubling in modern football, with more cases emerging globally.
âBut club authorities must exercise caution in order not to ruin a playerâs career without concrete proof.â
Adisa added that allegations of match fixing are serious and can damage both a playerâs name and a clubâs reputation, so any conclusion must follow a full review backed by credible evidence.
Former Enyimba and 3SC goalkeeper Mike Uweru also defended Obasogieâs right to fair treatment. He said the clips being circulated do not, on their own, prove wrongdoing.
âFrom the footage, his slip while attempting to hold the ball appeared unintended,â Uweru explained. âIn a crowded six-yard box, a goalkeeper has split seconds to react. A deflection from an opponent could easily send the ball back into the net.â
Obasogie has denied any involvement in match manipulation. In a statement to Singida management, teammates, supporters and the wider football community, he said he accepts responsibility for his performances but rejected the allegation that his errors were deliberate.
âI accept responsibility for my performance in those matches,â he stated, âbut mistakes on the field must not be mistaken for match manipulation.â
The goalkeeper said he is ready to appear before any disciplinary panel to clear his name and reaffirmed his commitment to Singida Black Stars while the process continues. The case remains under review, with stakeholders waiting for the clubâs final decision.
