Police in Edo State have begun an investigation into the killing of a 30-year-old decorator, Esohe Aigbe, who was attacked in Benin City after helping with preparations for a burial event.
The incident happened on May 27 at Ojo Street in the Ogida area of the city. Aigbe had reportedly gone to the area to assist a friend with decoration work at the venue before she was attacked by suspected assailants.
A source who asked not to be named for security reasons said the victim had finished the decoration job but was still at the venue when the attackers struck.
“The deceased was attacked with a machete at the venue of the burial where she went to do a decorating job. After the attack, the perpetrators left hurriedly,” the source said.
The source said people around the area later took Aigbe to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, where she died from the injuries she sustained in the attack.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed that it was aware of the killing and had already started work on the case.
The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said one person had been taken into custody as part of the investigation.
“I’m aware of a murder case in the area. We already have one suspect in our custody, and investigation is still ongoing as I speak to you,” she said.
The police did not immediately give further details on the identity of the suspect or the possible motive for the attack.
The killing adds to concerns over violent attacks in parts of Edo State, especially incidents involving residents going about routine work or social engagements.
Authorities are expected to establish whether the attack was targeted or linked to another dispute at the venue.
Residents in the area have called for a thorough investigation and stronger security around public events, saying workers and guests should be able to attend ceremonies without fear of violence.
The case remains under police investigation.
