The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has drawn a hard line within the Nigeria Police Force, declaring that discipline, not hierarchy, will define the new order. Addressing senior officers at the inaugural conference of strategic police managers held at the Peacekeeping Conference Centre in Abuja, Disu dismantled the old guard’s unwritten protections, warning that neither rank nor influence would shield erring officers from consequences. He told the gathering that the Force must return to its core mandate of serving the people, safeguarding the nation, and defending the rule of law, insisting that these are not ceremonial ideals but daily responsibilities that must be lived out in conduct. Driving home the urgency of reform, Disu reminded officers that their authority is sustained not just by law but by the confidence of the public, cautioning that any erosion of that trust weakens the institution itself. Under his watch, he said, professionalism, accountability, and transparency will cease to be catchphrases and become measurable standards within the Force. “We must be clear-eyed about our realities. In an era of heightened public scrutiny and instant communication, every action of the Police reflects instantly on the entire Force and indeed, on Nigeria itself,” the IGP said. “Misconduct, abuse of power, corruption, extortion, unlawful arrest or detention, no matter how isolated, erodes confidence and dishonours the uniform. Let me be unambiguous: such conduct will not be tolerated.”
Placing responsibility squarely on leadership, the IGP charged senior officers to set the tone through discipline and ethical conduct, noting that authority gains strength only when exercised with restraint, fairness, and sound judgment. He underscored that while the uniform confers legal authority, legitimacy ultimately flows from behaviour, stressing that respect for human rights is not discretionary but central to professional policing and public confidence. Disu further reminded officers that the Force belongs to the people, and that every citizen, regardless of background or status, deserves to be treated with dignity and fairness. He warned that any action that contradicts these principles would undermine institutional credibility and would not be tolerated under his leadership. In a move aimed at rebuilding confidence, the IGP announced plans to fortify internal accountability systems, ensuring they are strengthened and shielded from undue interference. He disclosed that key oversight units, including the Force Provost, the Complaints Response Unit, and the X-Squad, would be empowered to act independently and decisively in probing misconduct, corruption, and abuse of office. “The message must be clear: no officer is above the law,” he declared. Disu also called on citizens to speak up against wrongdoing, assuring them of protection, while warning officers that loyalty must never translate into covering up indiscipline. “Officers found culpable will face swift and appropriate disciplinary action, including dismissal and prosecution where applicable. This administration will act firmly, fairly, and transparently to deter misconduct, reinforce discipline, and restore public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.”
Beyond enforcement, the police chief signalled a parallel push for institutional renewal through capacity building, revealing that recruitment processes would undergo a comprehensive overhaul to admit only candidates of proven character, competence, and commitment. • Dortmund Identify PSV’s Malen, Madueke As Sancho Replacements As Man Utd Move Edges Closer
