Nigerian-American forward Ejimofor "E.J." Anosike won the 2026 NBL Slam Dunk Contest in China after being voted a starting All-Star, adding a fresh milestone to his fast-rising international career and strengthening Nigerian visibility in global basketball.
The All-Star Weekend took place in Zunyi, Guizhou Province, where the National Basketball League gathered its best performers at the Zunyi Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium. Anosike, who plays for the Hong Kong Bulls (HK JinNiu), entered the event as the top foreign-player vote-getter and finished it with the dunk title, a result that underlined both his athletic quality and his popularity with fans.
His recent success did not arrive in isolation. Over the past few seasons, Anosike has built a record across leagues in Asia, Europe and North America, while repeatedly presenting himself as a player who carries his Nigerian identity with intention.
Born in Staten Island, New York, Anosike grew up between the United States and Nigeria. Part of his formative years were spent in Okija, Anambra State, where he was exposed early to family responsibility and hard work. He has spoken about helping in a welding environment with his uncle and assisting his aunt with market trading, experiences he said shaped his discipline and perspective.
In an interview, Anosike said, "Being Igbo shaped everything. Your name, your character, your integrity, they matter. Where you come from carries responsibility."
That grounding travelled with him into the American college game. At Sacred Heart University, he developed into one of the Northeast Conference's leading players, earning Most Improved Player recognition before progressing to All-Conference honours. By 2020, he had secured First Team All-NEC recognition, plus NABC All-District and Lou Henson All-America mentions.
He also stood out in the classroom. Anosike was named NEC Winter Scholar-Athlete of the Year and made the conference academic honour roll, supporting his profile as an athlete who treated education as seriously as competition.
A transfer to California State University, Fullerton marked another jump in his trajectory. He was named Big West Conference Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-Big West, then produced a strong 2022 conference tournament run that ended with Tournament MVP honours. After helping his side win the title, he wrapped himself in the Nigerian flag on national television, a moment that resonated with viewers in Nigeria and the diaspora.
His move into the professional ranks continued the momentum. In 2022, he claimed KBL Cup MVP recognition in Asia. In Canada, he earned All-CEBL Second Team honours. In Europe, he added Belgian Forward of the Year and an All-BNXT First Team selection in 2024. During that same period, he delivered a 34-point outing at the ENBL Final Four and took All-Star recognition.
China has become one of the most defining stops in his career so far. In the NBL, Anosike won league MVP and the scoring title in 2024, then repeated as MVP in 2025, a rare feat for any import player. His latest All-Star weekend performance in 2026, capped by the dunk contest trophy, extends that run of high-level output.
His name has also appeared in award conversations connected to Nigerian representation abroad. He was recognised as Nigeria-France Sports Awards Breakout Player of the Year and later named D'Tigers Den International Player of the Year.
Beyond league fixtures, he has remained visible in off-season basketball spaces. One of the most discussed moments came in the Drew League, where he posted 43 points in a game featuring NBA player DeMar DeRozan.
Away from the court, Anosike has described prayer, reflection, relationships and cultural ties as central to his routine while moving across countries. He has said food, especially okra soup with pounded yam, keeps him connected to home. Through his YouTube series, Enjoying the Journey, he shares parts of his life beyond games, including travel, people and daily experiences around professional sport.
His academic path also remains central to his public story. He holds an MBA from California State University, Fullerton, and a master's degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Anosike has said he wants his work to outlast playing years. "I want to build systems, not just moments," he said. "Impact that lasts beyond basketball."
As his profile keeps growing, his journey speaks to a wider shift in the Nigerian diaspora: success is not only about leaving home, but about carrying identity, responsibility and representation into every arena.
