The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a patriot, elder statesman and “living legend” in a message marking Obasanjo’s 89th birthday.

In a statement issued in Ilorin through his Press Secretary, Dr Abdulazeez Arowona, the traditional ruler said Obasanjo remains one of Nigeria’s most recognised public figures because of his long record in national service and peace advocacy.

Sulu-Gambari said the former president’s influence spans military and democratic eras, noting that Obasanjo served as Nigeria’s former Military Head of State and later completed two terms as a democratically elected president.

According to the emir, Obasanjo’s profile in Nigeria and beyond reflects years of public engagement on nation building, dialogue and social harmony. He said the former president has kept a strong voice on peaceful coexistence and unity across ethnic and religious lines.

“We appreciate and know you as a nation-builder, a peaceful coexistence advocate, who promotes inter-religious and inter-cultural harmony,” the emir said.

Sulu-Gambari, who is also Chairman of the Kwara Traditional Rulers Council, said Obasanjo has maintained a close and respectful relationship with the Ilorin Emirate and Kwara State over the years.

He thanked Obasanjo for what he described as consistent identification with the emirate and the state, saying the relationship has remained steady across different periods in Nigeria’s political life.

“I, especially, thank you, Chief Olusegun Aremu Okikiola Obasanjo, for always identifying with the Ilorin Emirate and Kwara at all times,” he said.

The emir added that members of the Kwara Traditional Rulers Council joined him in celebrating Obasanjo on what he called a significant personal and national milestone.

“The entire members of the Kwara Traditional Rulers Council heartily celebrate and rejoice with you on this auspicious occasion of your birthday,” he said.

He prayed for Obasanjo’s continued strength and long life, asking God to grant him many more years in good health and comfort.

Obasanjo, one of Nigeria’s most prominent statesmen, has remained active in public discourse after leaving office, often speaking on governance, national cohesion and development issues.
