The All Progressives Congress in Anambra State has elected former senator Emmanuel Anosike as state chairman through a consensus process at its congress in Awka.
The congress, held on Tuesday in the state capital, also produced Chief J.C. Okeke as vice chairman and Chief Obi Okpala as secretary, alongside other members of the State Executive Committee.
Announcing the outcome, Chairman of the Anambra State Congress Committee and Returning Officer, Rear Admiral William Kayode (rtd), said the process complied with Articles 20 and 14 of the APC Constitution, including provisions that permit consensus for selecting party officers.
“I, Rear Admiral William Kayode (rtd), Chairman of the Congress Committee and Returning Officer for the Anambra State chapter of the APC, hereby affirm that the congress was free, fair, and credible,” he said.
“In fulfillment of the relevant provisions of Articles 20 and 14 of our party Constitution, Sen. Anosike and other elected members of the State Executive Committee are hereby duly elected and returned,” he said.
Before the declaration, Chairman of the Congress Harmonization Committee and Director-General of the South-East Governors’ Forum, Senator Uche Ekwunife, said the party adopted a “basketing” and consensus framework to produce leaders it considers credible and capable of repositioning the APC in Anambra.
She said party stakeholders across wards and local government areas were involved in the harmonisation exercise and that the approach was designed to move away from executive selections made without adequate consideration of competence and capacity.
“Stakeholders at the ward and local government levels were fully engaged in the harmonization process,” Ekwunife said.
“We invited representatives across all wards and local governments and, in line with constitutional provisions on consensus, agreed on a basketing arrangement to elect party members committed to the growth and progress of the party. We found Sen. Emmanuel Anosike and his executive team fit and proper to manage the affairs of the party in the state,” she said.
Following the exercise, the immediate past state executive committee led by Chief Basil Ejidike was dissolved. The decision followed a motion moved by Chief Olisa Metuh and seconded by Dr. Onuora Okonkwo, then adopted by voice vote.
In his acceptance speech, Anosike said his emergence represents a call to service and a responsibility to rebuild and strengthen the party in Anambra. He promised to run an inclusive administration and said no stakeholder would be pushed aside under his leadership.
“We shall ensure that all members are carried along in the affairs of the party. I assure all party faithful that this marks a new dawn for the APC in Anambra State,” Anosike said.
He also thanked Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma for his role in regional party coordination and said the APC in the state would work toward supporting President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
In his valedictory remarks, outgoing chairman Basil Ejidike, who served for seven years, urged members to support the new leadership team. He said he believes the party can continue to grow under the incoming executives.
The transition comes as APC stakeholders in Anambra attempt to reset internal structures ahead of future electoral cycles. Party leaders at the congress said unity across local structures and disciplined implementation of the new executive’s agenda would be central to their next phase in the state.
