Figma, the design platform, is merging its services with OpenAI’s AI coding tool, Codex, to enable users to develop and modify designs directly within their coding environments. This development follows a recent partnership between Figma and Anthropic to integrate Claude Code. The integration allows users to switch seamlessly between Figma’s design tools and Codex’s coding capabilities via Figma’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. Previously, users could transfer design elements from Figma files, Figma Make, or FigJam into Codex for code execution. Loredana Crisan, Figma’s chief design officer, highlighted that the integration empowers teams to refine their best ideas by blending coding expertise with Figma’s creative and collaborative features. Alexander Embiricos, Codex product lead, noted that the tool now caters to a wider audience by not requiring users to be designers or engineers first, enabling engineers to visualize changes without interrupting their workflow and allowing designers to engage with real-world implementation without becoming full coders. OpenAI introduced Codex as a command-line assistant last year to rival Claude Code. The tool was later integrated into ChatGPT, and a dedicated macOS app for Codex was launched this month. The macOS app saw a million downloads in its first week, with OpenAI also releasing two new Codex models shortly after. The company reported over a million weekly users of Codex. Figma has been a key collaborator for OpenAI, being one of the first companies to launch an app in ChatGPT in October 2025.
