The GSMA has announced the global launch of a new Innovation Fund designed to support small and growing enterprises that are leveraging mobile and digital technologies to accelerate environmental sustainability in developing regions. The GSMA Innovation Fund for Green Transition for Mobile will provide grants ranging from £100,000 to £200,000 to enterprises creating commercially viable solutions that expand access to clean energy and promote sustainable practices within the mobile ecosystem.Funded by the GSMA and supported by its member organisations, the initiative forms part of the mobile industry's broader commitment to achieving sustainable connectivity and net-zero emissions targets. The programme specifically targets enterprises operating across Africa, Central and South America, and South and Southeast Asia. It seeks solutions that enhance digital inclusion and affordability whilst delivering measurable environmental benefits and supporting socio-economic empowerment in these regions.According to the GSMA, the fund will give priority to innovations that utilise mobile-enabled technologies to broaden access to renewable energy and improve energy efficiency. Eligible solutions include smart metering systems, renewable energy deployments, device refurbishment programmes, and responsible electronic waste management systems. The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which recognise the critical role of digital technologies in fostering inclusive and sustainable economic development worldwide.A significant aspect of the Innovation Fund is its emphasis on promoting circular economy approaches within the mobile sector. The programme aims to extend the lifespan of mobile devices through repair, refurbishment, and reuse initiatives, thereby reducing electronic waste whilst simultaneously improving handset affordability for consumers.Supported business models may include trade-in and take-back programmes, leasing arrangements, refurbished device marketplaces, traceability platforms, and responsible e-waste collection and recycling infrastructure.By prolonging the useful life of mobile devices, the initiative seeks to minimise environmental impact whilst reducing the cost of connectivity for underserved communities, supporting both ecological sustainability and digital inclusion objectives.
