The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) has warned of what it described as an existential danger confronting Christians across Africa, saying the situation is worsening in several countries.
In a report released on Thursday, the civil rights group said about 750 million Christians on the continent are increasingly at risk. It highlighted Nigeria, Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Ethiopia as major flashpoints, adding that those countries account for an estimated 300 million African Christians.
The report was signed by Mr Emeka Umeagbalasi, Head, Intersociety; Chidinma Evangeline Udegbunam, Esquire, Human Rights Lawyer/Head, Dept. of Campaign and Publicity; Chinwe Umeche, Esquire, Human Rights Lawyer/Head, Democracy Department; Obianuju Joy Igboeli, Esquire, Human Rights Lawyer/Head, Dept. of Civil Liberties and Rule of Law; and Comrade (Elder) Anayo Okoli, Journalist/Democracy Activist, Board Member.
“Our assessment is predictive and prophetic-talking about what will be their fate in the next 75-100 years or 2075-2125AD,” Intersociety said, expressing fear that “with the maddening rate the Islamic Jihadist groups are rising and multiplying in their numbers and strengths, grave danger is in the offing.”
The organisation also pointed to figures from Nigeria, where it said a recent account covered the condition of Christians over the last 16 years since the Boko Haram uprising in 2009.
According to the report, “189,300 including 128,000 Christians and 61,300 moderate, collateral victims and ethno-religious targeted Muslims were killed since between July 2009 and Feb 2026, during which 130,000, including 80, 000 Christians and 50,000 Muslims were abducted and 19,500 churches attacked, destroyed or burned down or sacked, out of which no fewer than 400 were affected since the past 15 months of Dec 2024-Feb 2026.
“No fewer than 1000 Christian clerics including estimated 300 Catholic priests and 100 minor Catholic clerics and not less than 600 Pentecostal pastors, Anglican priests and prophets and prophetesses of other Christian denominations were attacked and abducted, out of which dozens killed or still missing in captivity.”
Intersociety added that “No fewer than six churches were also found to have borne the worst of the catastrophes-during which not less than 15m Christians- majorly in Northern Nigeria were uprooted and forced to flee, out of which, 10m IDPs and 300,000 refugees generated.
“Also, an estimated 1200 Christian communities, inhabiting 22,000 square miles have been sacked and dozens renamed and Islamized.”
