Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS) has suspended Sheikh Alkali Abubakar Salihu Zaria from leading his annual Ramadan Tafseer in Damaturu, Yobe State, following remarks he made about insecurity and political leadership in northern Nigeria.
The decision was announced after a meeting led by the National Chairman of the JIBWIS Council of Ulama, Sheikh Muhammad Sani Yahaya Jingir. The organisation said the cleric was stopped from continuing his sessions at Mokas Mosque because he allegedly breached internal preaching rules.
According to the council, Sheikh Alkali used language they considered too harsh and departed from what they described as the proper method for explaining Qur’anic teachings in public religious gatherings.
The controversy followed one of his recent Tafseer sessions in which he criticised the federal government and some state governors over persistent attacks, kidnappings and ransom demands in parts of the North. He spoke about the hardship faced by victims and families, including those affected during the Ramadan period.
In his comments, the cleric said some governors appeared more focused on demonstrating loyalty to President Bola Tinubu than being directly accountable to citizens facing daily security threats. The statement quickly circulated and triggered strong reactions among supporters and critics.
After news of the suspension spread, Sheikh Alkali addressed his followers on social media. He urged them to stay calm, remain disciplined and avoid actions that could create tension. He said they should accept the outcome as part of destiny and maintain order.
He also expressed respect for Sheikh Jingir, describing him as a father figure, and said believers should remain patient because events unfold according to the will of Allah.
The incident has drawn attention to growing debate within religious and civic spaces about how clerics should address governance, insecurity and public accountability in sermons. While JIBWIS insists the suspension was based on internal standards for preaching conduct, the development reflects wider concerns in northern communities where residents continue to demand stronger responses to violence and abductions.
For now, the suspension means Sheikh Alkali will not continue the Damaturu Ramadan Tafseer under JIBWIS authority, even as discussions around religious leadership, public criticism and political responsibility remain active.
