Primate Elijah Ayodele said a possible presidential ticket pairing former President Goodluck Jonathan with former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso would put strong pressure on the ruling All Progressives Congress in the next general election.
The leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church made the remarks during a church service clip shared online. He said the combination could reshape the contest and make the race difficult for President Bola Tinubu’s party.
Ayodele said, “It’s going to be Jonathan, Kwankwaso on that ticket, and it’s going to give APC Tinubu government a very tough time.” He added that the coming election cycle may be more competitive than many supporters of the ruling party expect.
The cleric also urged Kwankwaso to consider moving to the African Democratic Congress. Ayodele said the party could become a base for a stronger opposition coalition if political alignments continue to shift before the polls.
“Kwankwaso should go to ADC,” he said, arguing that such a move could help form what he described as a formidable presidential team. He repeated that the next national vote would not be straightforward for the APC.
“It’s not going to be an easy election. No, it’s not,” Ayodele said.
Beyond domestic party movements, Ayodele said the proposed alliance could draw support from outside Nigeria. He did not provide details on what form that backing might take, but he maintained that the political field could change significantly ahead of the election period.
His comments come at a time of continued speculation over opposition strategy, possible coalition talks and ticket calculations among leading blocs. While no official joint ticket involving Jonathan and Kwankwaso has been announced, Ayodele’s intervention adds to wider public discussion about how opposition parties could organise against the incumbent in the next cycle.
For now, his position is a political forecast rather than a declared campaign arrangement, but it underscores the high level of attention on coalition arithmetic as parties prepare for future contests.
