Kaizer Chiefs have stepped up efforts to sign Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali after first-choice keeper Brandon Petersen underwent appendix surgery and now faces weeks on the sidelines.
The South African club have tabled an offer for Nwabali, according to Afrik-Foot, as they seek an immediate solution in goal during a difficult stretch of the season. Petersen had surgery on Friday and was expected to leave hospital on Monday, but his return date is still uncertain. Medical recovery from an appendectomy can take between three and six weeks, meaning Chiefs may need a reliable stand-in for several fixtures.
Chiefs felt the impact quickly. With Bruce Bvuma in goal, they were beaten 3-0 by Orlando Pirates in the Soweto derby. That result left the team 11 points behind in the Betway Premiership title race and increased pressure on the technical crew to strengthen key positions.
Nwabali, 29, is available as a free agent after leaving Chippa United earlier this year. His availability, experience in the league, and status as an established Nigeria international have made him a strong candidate for the role.
Chiefs had tracked Nwabali during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The goalkeeper impressed for the Super Eagles as Nigeria finished with a bronze medal, and the club’s renewed approach now signals a formal attempt to bring him to Naturena.
Beyond his international displays, Nwabali also offers familiarity with the South African top flight. He has made 66 appearances in the Betway Premiership, a record that reduces adaptation risk for a side needing immediate consistency.
Chiefs are also managing other injury concerns involving Rushwin Dortley, George Matlou and Given Msimango. With several senior options unavailable, squad depth has become a growing concern at a decisive point in their campaign.
Before his illness, Petersen had played an important role in Chiefs’ recent progress, including the 2-1 win over Pirates in last season’s Nedbank Cup final, a victory that ended the club’s 10-year wait for silverware.
