The six zonal coordinators of the National Association of Nigerian Students have endorsed the newly appointed chairman of the Independent Convention Planning Committee, Comr. Oladele Samuel Omotayo, and asked him to deliver a transparent and constitution-based national convention.
In a joint message, the coordinators from all geopolitical zones said Omotayo, also known as Dele Kenko, emerged at an important point for the association and carries the confidence of student leaders nationwide. They said his appointment reflects trust in his integrity, neutrality and commitment to democratic procedures as NANS prepares for a convention many students consider decisive for the group’s direction.
The statement was signed by Comr. Nuruddeen Baba Waziri, Zone A Coordinator for the North West; Comr. Victor Ogechukwu Anthony, Zone B Coordinator for the South South; Comr. Hussaini Jamilu Ebbo, Zone C Coordinator for the North Central; Comr. Josiah Kayode Adeyemo, Zone D Coordinator for the South West; Comr. Emmanuel Ekechukwu Iyke, Zone F Coordinator for the South East; and Comr. Muhammed Muazu Hina, Zone E Coordinator for the North East.
According to the coordinators, the credibility of the coming convention will depend on how impartially and openly the convention committee operates. They said members across campuses expect a process that reflects accountability, inclusiveness and strict respect for internal rules.
“As leaders representing the six geopolitical zones, we collectively reaffirm our full confidence in your ability to deliver a free, fair, credible and hitch-free convention that will further strengthen the unity, stability and institutional integrity of NANS,” the statement read.
They added that all aspirants and stakeholders must work with the committee and follow laid-down procedures. The leaders warned that anyone unwilling to comply with constitutional guidelines should step aside from the process.
“The NANS Constitution is clear on the processes of elections. We urge all stakeholders to cooperate with the committee set up to deliver a befitting convention,” the statement added.
Speaking for the forum, Hussaini Jamilu Ebbo, who is also Chairman of the Forum of Zonal Coordinators, said the committee would receive full institutional backing to carry out its national assignment. He said student leaders from the six zones are presenting a united front to ensure the process does not deepen divisions in the body.
With preparations now under way, the zonal leadership said the convention must produce outcomes that protect the unity and credibility of Nigeria’s foremost student movement.
