Senator Ned Nwoko has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Delta State Deputy Governor, Chief Benjamin Elue, describing the development as both shocking and painful for Delta people and the wider political community.
Elue, who served as deputy governor under former Governor James Ibori from 1999 to 2007, died on Saturday at the age of 85. In a condolence message issued in Abuja on Sunday, Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District, said the late elder statesman leaves behind a legacy that will be difficult to replace.
The senator said Elue’s passing was not only a personal loss to him, but also a collective loss to Delta State. He said his relationship with the late former deputy governor spanned many years and was built on social, cultural and political ties marked by respect and trust.
Nwoko said Elue played a fatherly role in his life and described him as a calm adviser and dependable confidant. He noted that the late statesman carried himself with dignity and restraint even in moments of political pressure.
According to the senator, Elue brought integrity, honesty and accountability to public office during his years in government. He said those qualities stood out strongly during his tenure and helped define him as one of the most respected political figures produced by Delta State.
Nwoko also said Elue’s modest lifestyle and disciplined conduct set him apart from the excesses often associated with Nigeria’s political space. He said the former deputy governor remained principled and humane, while maintaining strong values in both public life and private interactions.
“It is with immense grief that I received the sad news of the passing of Chief Benjamin Elue, former deputy governor of our dear state,” Nwoko said. He added that Elue would be remembered for his patriotic service and meaningful contributions to Delta’s growth and development.
The senator said the late leader’s record of selfless service and moral clarity should remain a point of reflection for public office holders. He said Elue’s life offered an example of leadership rooted in discipline, humility and responsibility to the people.
Tributes are expected to continue across Delta State as family members, political associates and community leaders remember the former deputy governor’s years of service and enduring public image.
