The Ogun State Judiciary football team emerged victorious over their counterparts from the Nigerian Bar Association in a novelty match played at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Kuto, Abeokuta, on Wednesday.
The Judiciary team secured a 1-0 victory in the match which formed part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of the Ogun State Judiciary.
The NBA team had an opportunity to equalise in the dying minutes of the second half when they were awarded a penalty, but a superb save from the Judiciary goalkeeper denied them the chance.
Speaking after the match, the Chief Judge of Ogun State, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, noting that it further demonstrates the judiciary's commitment to promoting a healthy work-life balance for its staff.
Justice Dipeolu encouraged staff of the State Judiciary to incorporate sports into their work routine, highlighting the benefits for productivity and overall well-being.
"We encourage our staff to be involved in sporting activities, even at work," she said.
The Chief Judge recalled that during Justice Olopade's tenure, a sports team was established and an arena was created at the Isabo High Court where staff would engage in various games including table tennis, opon-ayo, ludo, and chess after work hours.
She also noted that at the national level, the National Judicial Council organises an annual football competition in which states participate.
Justice Dipeolu took the opportunity to highlight the tremendous growth of the state judiciary over the past 50 years. She revealed that the High Court started with just five judges but now boasts 36 judges, while judicial divisions have increased from five to 11.
The magisterial districts have also expanded from 21 to over 40 magistrates. Additional developments include the establishment of judicial research officers to assist judges, the multi-door courthouse, family courts, and small claims courts.
The administrative structure has similarly expanded, with the number of deputy chief registrars increasing from two to six at the High Court, plus two directors at the multi-door courthouse.
"We thank God that we have progressed. The Ogun State Judiciary started at Isabo with the High Court and the Magistrate Court. We have really, really expanded," Justice Dipeolu added.
