Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has said Kelechi Iheanacho’s difficult run this year is mainly down to fitness issues and limited opportunities, as the Nigerian forward continues to fight for regular minutes in Scotland.

Iheanacho, 29, joined Celtic in the summer transfer window after ending his three-year deal with Sevilla following one season. He made an encouraging start at the club, contributing to three goals in his first four games, but his momentum slowed after a hamstring problem.

Speaking to Daily Record, O’Neill said Iheanacho has not played enough this season to settle into a rhythm and show his full level.

“I don’t think he [Iheanacho] has played that much during the course of the season, to tell you the truth. But I think he’s got a good ability to hold it up,” O’Neill said.

The Celtic boss added that match sharpness remains a concern for the striker at this stage of the campaign.

“It is just in terms of full fitness and things, that’s a bit of a concern. I do feel for him a little bit, because my job is not to please everyone here at the football club,” he said.

O’Neill also suggested squad competition has made selection more difficult for the former Super Eagles attacker.

“To be perfectly honest, I don’t think he’s had a proper chance, because I thought there were other people who may be better equipped for this league at this minute,” he said.

For Nigerian football followers, Iheanacho’s form remains important ahead of major international fixtures, especially with AFCON and other national team commitments always in view. His situation at club level is likely to be watched closely by supporters and national team handlers.

Recent reports around Celtic have focused on whether the forward can return to sustained action once fully fit. The club, meanwhile, continues its domestic and cup schedule, with several matches still to play this season.

While his start in Scotland showed promise, Iheanacho’s progress has been interrupted by injury and reduced game time. O’Neill’s comments point to a player who still has quality, but who needs consistent minutes and full physical condition before he can make a stronger impact.
