Asisat Oshoala has described the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand as the most memorable competition of her career with the Super Falcons, saying the tournament captured the team’s progress on the global stage.

Speaking to Ghanasoccernet, the Nigeria and Al Hilal forward said she treats every major tournament with the same level of commitment, whether it is the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations or the World Cup. According to her, she approaches each game with full intensity because of her love for football and her responsibility to the national team.

Still, Oshoala said the 2023 World Cup stood above other events she has played in. She pointed specifically to Nigeria’s matches against co-hosts Australia and later against England as defining moments of that campaign.

The Super Falcons entered the tournament ranked 40th in the world by FIFA, but delivered a run that drew widespread praise. Nigeria held Olympic champions Canada to a draw in the group stage, beat host nation Australia, and then pushed England to extra time and penalties in the round of 16 before being eliminated.

For Oshoala, those outings reflected how far the side has come in organisation, mentality and execution against top opponents. She said the team has continued to grow from one competition to another and has shown that it can stay competitive under pressure against higher-ranked teams.

She also recalled difficult moments from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the Falcons had to respond after falling two goals behind in one of their toughest periods in that tournament. Oshoala said the group’s ability to fight back together and support one another made that experience important in the team’s development.

Her remarks come as preparations continue for the next phase of the national team calendar. Oshoala was not named in the latest Super Falcons squad announced by head coach Justine Madugu for pre-WAFCON friendlies against Cameroon in Yaounde.

Even so, the striker’s comments place emphasis on continuity in the women’s programme: maintain the standards set at the 2023 World Cup, keep improving squad depth, and carry that momentum into future continental and global tournaments.
