Abia State Governor Alex Otti said his government would rather be judged by daily living conditions than by publicity campaigns, as he launched new infrastructure works in Aba.
Speaking at the flag-off for the reconstruction of the Enyimba International Hotel, Otti said residents’ experiences remain the strongest evidence of government performance. The event took place shortly after he inaugurated the Ovom land reclamation and road project, another intervention aimed at improving movement and business activity in the city.
Addressing criticism over the absence of celebratory billboards, the governor said his administration is focused on outcomes people can see and feel in their communities. He said landlords, residents, traders, schoolchildren and artisans around Ovom already reflect the value of the projects through the changes in their environment and expectations.
Otti said the hotel redevelopment, which the state plans to deliver with Radisson Blu, also carries historic significance. According to him, the initiative continues a vision first set out by leaders of the former East Central State more than 50 years ago. He added that previous investors, including members of the Aba Chamber of Commerce Industry Mines and Agriculture, had committed resources in earlier phases even though completion proved difficult at the time.
The governor said the state would work with engineering partners over the next 12 months to deliver a 120-room facility that matches Aba’s role as a growing commercial and industrial centre in West Africa. He added that a convention centre is also planned within the same complex to host business and public-sector gatherings.
He commended the Greater Aba Development Authority, led by Director General Architect Uche Ukeje and Board Chairman Ide John Udeagbala, as well as partners such as ACCIMA, for supporting the project’s return.
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South Senatorial District, said the state should maintain the pace of renewal. He said sustained investment in roads and related infrastructure would support enterprise growth and open wider business opportunities across the state.
