Peter Akpe has been sworn in as Bayelsa Stateβs sixth deputy governor following his confirmation by the state House of Assembly.
Mr Akpe, a pastor and former chief of staff to Governor Douye Diri, took the oath of office on Wednesday at the Bayelsa State Executive Council Chamber in Yenagoa. The ceremony was conducted by the state Chief Judge, Justice Matilda Abrakasa Ayemieye.
The event also featured the swearing-in of four commissioners and 14 permanent secretaries.
During his remarks, Governor Diri paid tribute to the late former deputy governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who collapsed in his office in December and later died at the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa. Mr Ewhrudjakpo was buried in January.
Governor Diri described Mr Akpe as competent and God-fearing, saying his nomination was based on character and capacity. He added that the appointment followed constitutional provisions under the 1999 Constitution as amended.
The governor asked the new deputy governor to uphold his oath and serve the state with integrity and empathy, while assuring him of full support.
Mr Akpe is expected to serve out the remaining two years of the current administration.
