A civil rights group has spoken out against the kidnapping of former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar (Rtd.), and his spouse. The incident occurred in Katsina State, where suspected bandits targeted the couple. The organisation, known as Prayer and Support for the Nigerian Armed Forces and Other Security Agencies (PSNAFOSA), described the event as a direct assault on a patriot who served the country well.
Ambassador Mary Abayomi Fatile, who serves as the Convener of the group, called the abduction disturbing. She emphasized that Abubakar dedicated his life to national service. Reports indicate the couple was travelling along the Matazu Local Government Area axis when they were taken. Their driver managed to escape the attackers but sustained gunshot wounds. Police later recovered their red Peugeot 406 vehicle at the Matazu Division.
Fatile urged the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts. She called for the immediate and unconditional release of the retired officer and his wife. “Major General R. Abubakar served this nation with dedication, professionalism, and loyalty throughout his military career,” she said. “It is therefore painful to witness such a distinguished officer and his wife subjected to this traumatic experience. We urge the government and security agencies to deploy all necessary resources to ensure their safe rescue,” she added.
The group also raised alarms about rising insecurity across the country. They specifically mentioned the recent kidnapping of schoolchildren in Oyo State. Fatile appealed to authorities to speed up rescue operations for the children. She stressed that these students represent the future of Nigeria. “The children must be rescued without delay. They are the future leaders of our nation, and every effort must be made to guarantee their safety and protect their right to education,” she said.
Furthermore, the Convener appealed to the kidnappers to change their ways. She asked them to release all victims unharmed. “Nigeria has never been known for this level of insecurity and criminality. We appeal to those behind these acts to stop and embrace peace. The pain inflicted on families, communities, and the nation is immeasurable,” she said. PSNAFOSA reaffirmed its support for security personnel through prayers and advocacy. They urged Nigerians to cooperate with agencies in fighting crime.
