Lagos State First Lady Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu joined a broad mix of public figures in Lagos on Wednesday as Wema Bank held its 2026 International Women’s Day programme focused on women’s economic inclusion.

Film producer Funke Akindele, singer Waje, dancer Kaffy, drummer Ara and vocalist Yinka Davies attended the event, alongside UN Women Resident Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Beatrice Eyong, TV anchor Olive Emodi and actor Daniel Etim Effiong.

The bank said the session was built around the IWD 2026 theme, “Give To Gain,” with discussions under the headline “When Women Gain, We Grow.” Participants examined how finance, mentoring and institutional support can widen opportunities for women and reduce persistent gender gaps.

Moruf Oseni, managing director and chief executive officer of Wema Bank, said the conversation was tied to economic outcomes, not symbolism. He cited UN Women data showing that as of 2025, 10 percent of women still live in extreme poverty, and warned that more than 350 million women and girls could remain in that condition by 2030 if current trends continue.

Oseni said wider participation by women in the economy can strengthen households, improve business growth and support national productivity. He added that the lender has maintained programmes designed to support women within its workforce and across its customer segments.

According to him, the bank’s approach is based on the view that giving women better access to opportunity creates multiplier effects across communities. He said Wema Bank plans to sustain that direction as part of its long-term strategy.

The event also included recognition and grant support for women-led impact work. Through the SARA Gives to Empower Her Award, the bank honoured five women whose projects support other women with measurable results.

In addition, Wema Bank presented the He For She Award to five male employees recognised for promoting women’s advancement at work.

Another major announcement was the launch of the Wema Bank Girl Child Journal. The publication carries contributions from 80 professionals, offering guidance and practical reflections aimed at helping young girls make informed life and career choices.

With participation from government, development institutions and the creative industry, the Lagos event reinforced the role financial institutions can play in moving gender-inclusion commitments from campaign language to practical support.
