Former Senate President Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki has issued a rallying call for unity, reconciliation, and renewed grassroots mobilisation within the Peoples Democratic Party in Kwara State, emphasising that collective effort will be essential for electoral success in next year's general election.
Saraki made the appeal during a meeting with former councillors, supervising councillors, and ex-local government chairmen from across the state's 16 local government areas, held in Ilorin on Wednesday. The gathering forms part of an ongoing consultation process with party stakeholders as the PDP positions itself for the 2027 electoral contest.
In a statement released through his Press Officer on Local Matters, Mallam Abdulganiyu Abdulqadir, Saraki expressed appreciation for the patience, loyalty, and sacrifices demonstrated by former council officials, noting that their steadfastness through political challenges remained vital to the party's strength.
"The PDP remains a shared home for all of us," he declared, offering thanks "for the gift of life and the strength to keep pushing forward."
Speaking in the spirit of the ongoing Ramadan season, Saraki urged party members to allow faith to guide their political engagements and to set aside longstanding differences for the greater good of the state.
"This Ramadan, I ask that we allow faith to shape our politics—that we drop old grievances, forgive one another, and reach out to those who may have stepped away from our fold. We must keep our eyes firmly on Kwara's collective interest," he stated.
The former Senate President stressed that genuine reconciliation represents a necessary foundation for rebuilding the party's structures and strengthening its grassroots base. He argued that without internal harmony, the PDP would struggle to present a credible alternative to the electorate.
"That kind of reconciliation is our starting point. If we are serious about rescuing Kwara and securing its future, we must continue to strengthen our grassroots base," Saraki added.
His comments reflect the challenging political landscape in Kwara State, where the PDP has faced significant setbacks in recent electoral cycles. The call for reconciliation suggests ongoing factional divisions within the state chapter that must be addressed before the party can mount an effective challenge in 2027.
Saraki concluded with an appeal for generational solidarity, urging members to look beyond personal and political differences. "Let us put the past behind us and move forward together, for the sake of the next generation," he said.
The meeting underscores the early mobilisation efforts already underway as political parties begin positioning for the 2027 general election, with Saraki clearly intent on rebuilding the PDP's organisational capacity from the grassroots upward.
