Sunny Joseph Imohimi (FICA) has been crowned the ICT Innovator of the Year at the 2026 Africa Beacon of ICT (BoICT) Awards. The ceremony took place in Lagos on May 30, 2026, gathering key players from Africa’s tech sector to honor excellence in the industry.
Imohimi, who currently holds the position of Regional Manager for MENA & Africa (EMEA) at Bitget, received the honor for his significant work in fintech, blockchain, and digital payments. His efforts have notably advanced mobility technology and smart infrastructure in emerging markets.
Over his career, Imohimi has established a strong track record in expanding markets and fostering ecosystem growth across Africa and the Middle East. At Bitget, his leadership has sped up the development of peer-to-peer ecosystems and merchant operations. He has also focused on payment optimization and strategic partnerships, which have boosted digital financial inclusion and technology adoption in multiple countries.
Before his role at Bitget, Imohimi spent more than three and a half years at Binance. During this period, he was instrumental in operations and growth strategies across over 40 African markets. A major highlight of his tenure there was leading the launch of the Pay-in-Chat feature in Africa. This innovation allowed users to conduct digital transactions directly through integrated chat interfaces.
Earlier in his professional journey, Imohimi worked with Bolt, where he spearheaded market expansion for mobility services across eight Nigerian cities. His strategic execution and operational scaling efforts contributed to a tenfold increase in business growth during that time.
In addition to his work in fintech and mobility, Imohimi is actively involved in smart infrastructure innovation through Arkcess Technology Limited. This company focuses on improving estate living by implementing digital access control systems, smart community management tools, and connected residential infrastructure.
Mr. Ken Nwogbo, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Communications Week Media, presented the award. He praised Imohimi’s visionary leadership and his dedication to creating technology solutions that solve real-world problems in Africa and other emerging markets. Nwogbo described Imohimi as “a forward-thinking innovator whose work continues to shape the future of digital finance, smart infrastructure, and technology-driven growth on the continent.”
In his acceptance speech, Imohimi thanked the organizers, industry stakeholders, his teams, and partners for their support. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and the potential of technology to change lives and economies.
“This recognition represents the power of innovation, collaboration, and the limitless potential of technology to transform lives and economies. I remain committed to building solutions that create access, drive inclusion, and shape the future of digital transformation across Africa and beyond,” he said.
The Africa Beacon of ICT Awards, organized annually by Communications Week Media, is widely regarded as a leading platform for recognizing achievement within the ICT sector. Imohimi’s win as ICT Innovator of the Year solidifies his status as a prominent figure in African technology innovation and digital transformation. His accomplishments continue to motivate a new wave of innovators dedicated to developing scalable solutions that promote economic growth and technological progress across the continent.
