The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said ongoing donor-backed transmission projects worth more than $1.3 billion are being executed across the country to raise grid capacity and improve power delivery.

In information released in Abuja, the company said transmission expansion is highly capital intensive and requires steady long-term financing to avoid delays. It explained that, to close funding gaps, it is implementing multiple projects through dedicated units that manage programmes financed by development partners and backed by the Federal Government.

TCN listed a $486 million Nigeria Electricity Transmission Project under the World Bank programme, focused on strengthening key lines and substations. It also identified two Agence Francaise de Developpement-backed projects: the $170 million Abuja Transmission Project and the $200 million Northern Corridor Project, both targeted at stronger evacuation of bulk power and improved grid stability in major load centres.

Under the African Development Bank portfolio, the company said the $210 million Nigeria Transmission Expansion Project is being delivered across parts of the North-west, South-east and South-south, including Kano, Kaduna, Delta, Edo, Anambra, Imo and Abia states. TCN said the programme combines upgrades of existing facilities with new installations to support demand growth.

The utility added that Japan International Cooperation Agency is financing the $235 million Lagos-Ogun Power Transmission Project to improve supply reliability in Nigeria’s main industrial and commercial corridor.

Beyond physical infrastructure, TCN said it is expanding digital operations. The company confirmed progress on an enterprise resource planning system, with consultancy support already in place and a main contract, partly financed by AFD, now operational. It said the platform will connect legacy and new digital systems while reducing manual workflows.

TCN further said mini data centres are active in eight regional offices, disaster recovery centres have been completed in Lagos and Shiroro, and LAN/WAN integration has improved connectivity across regions. It added that CCTV deployment in control rooms and switchyards is nearing completion nationwide to strengthen security of critical assets.

According to TCN, its revenue comes mainly from service payments by market participants, with additional support from federal capital allocations, grants and concessional loans from partners including the World Bank, AfDB, JICA, AFD and the European Union.
