President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday charged the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to restore peace and strengthen security across Nigeria, pledging his full support for the new police chief.

Speaking at the State House during the decoration ceremony of the Acting IGP, the President acknowledged the current security challenges facing the nation and reaffirmed his confidence that Nigeria would overcome them under committed leadership.

Disu's appointment follows the retirement of the former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and is subject to ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate.

"I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor," Tinubu said.

Describing the appointment as coming at a critical time, the President urged Disu to rebuild public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force and strengthen collaboration with other security agencies.

"Lead firmly but fairly. Demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It is a daunting challenge, but I know you can do it. You have my word; you have my full support," he added.

Tinubu further tasked the Acting IGP with advancing the security objectives of his administration's Renewed Hope Agenda, expressing confidence in Disu's discipline, operational experience, and leadership capacity.

"Nigeria is challenged by banditry, terrorism, and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation required to overcome them," the President said.

The President also paid tribute to the outgoing IGP, Egbetokun, who attended the ceremony with his spouse.

"To the outgoing Inspector-General, we are a grateful nation. Nigeria appreciates your contribution to maintaining law and order," Tinubu stated.

He encouraged Egbetokun to continue to offer guidance to his successor and wished him and his family good health and success in their future endeavours.

"You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy," he added.

Tinubu called on all security stakeholders to work collectively to safeguard lives and property during what he described as a critical period for the nation.

Among those present at the ceremony were the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori; retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police Hakeem Odumosu; senior government officials; and family members of the Acting IGP.
