President Bola Tinubu has appealed to the leadership of the 10th Senate to amend the constitution to provide a legal framework for State Police.

Speaking on Wednesday, the President charged senators to accommodate the establishment of State Police in the ongoing constitutional amendment process.

The call comes amid ongoing debates about security restructuring in Nigeria, with many stakeholders advocating for decentralised policing to address the country's security challenges.

Currently, policing is centrally controlled by the federal government through the Nigeria Police Force. The proposed amendment would allow states to establish and manage their own police services alongside the federal police.

The constitutional amendment process requires two-thirds approval from both chambers of the National Assembly and ratification by at least two-thirds of state houses of assembly.
